VMware to Proxmox migration: out of the renewal, without breaking your production.

Facing a VMware renewal you cannot justify, with servers in Europe? Your exit is priced before you decide, then the estate moves in waves with a tested restore at every step, on a fixed fee.

What does Proxmox VE support cost, per socket and per year?

Vendor list prices for Proxmox VE subscriptions, per physical CPU socket and per year. The software itself runs without one.

Tier, and what it includesPer socket, per year
Community120 €
Enterprise repository, no support tickets with the vendor
Basic370 €
Enterprise repository, 3 support tickets a year
Standard550 €
Enterprise repository, 10 support tickets a year
Premium1100 €
Enterprise repository, unlimited support tickets

Vendor list prices, not our rates. We do not resell licenses: if you take a subscription, it is in your name, at the tier your estate needs.

What does a VMware to Proxmox migration involve?

Moving your virtual machines from VMware vSphere to Proxmox VE, then rebuilding everything around them: the drivers inside each guest, the backup chain, the monitoring and the operating procedures.

Moving the disks takes hours. Revalidating everything around them takes weeks, and that part decides whether the project ends quietly or with an incident.

For a European estate the choice has a second meaning: your hypervisor, its support contract and your data stay with a European vendor, on hardware or EU hosting you choose, with no license server deciding whether your machines may run next year.

VMware vSphere or Proxmox VE: the criteria that decide for you.

Not a feature list: who controls the cost, who you call at night, and what it takes to move.

Four stages, none skipped: what you hold at the end of each.

  1. Before any move

A costed decision: the exit against the renewal.

An inventory of what each machine does, what depends on what, which backup covers it, and from it a fixed-fee price. Sometimes the answer is to renegotiate with a real number in hand.

Modernize or renegotiate: price the exit first
  2. The pilot

One machine, all the way to a tested restore.

Import, VirtIO drivers inside the guest, monitoring, backup, then a restore actually tested on the new platform. That single machine validates the whole chain, not only the import.

  3. Wave by wave

Machines that depend on each other move together, with a rollback.

Agreed maintenance windows, and a rollback plan written before each wave: how we return, in how long, what data would be lost. No big-bang weekend.

  4. At handover

A platform that restores, and runbooks your team has tested.

Restarting a machine, adding disk, taking a snapshot, failing over: written, then tested by someone who did not write them.

A method from systems that could not stop.

Inside the corporate IT department of CFAO, an international distribution group, we modernized infrastructure and rebuilt more than ten business applications running on operating systems and middleware past their end of support. Wave after wave, one application at a time, never a single high-risk cutover. We would rather say it was not Proxmox than let you assume it. What transfers is the discipline.

Once it is live, your team runs the platform, or we watch it lightly.

Your team runs it, with runbooks it has tested and one person trained during the migration rather than in the last week. Or you add a light arrangement under our post-launch support: monitoring on the indicators agreed at exit, security updates, a fix if something breaks. You can cancel it, and it never recreates a dependency.

The Proxmox subscription is yours, bought from the vendor or a reseller. We have no reason to recommend a tier you do not need.

Post-launch support

Who moves your machines, and who can restart them afterwards.

The engineers who price the exit are the ones who run the waves. On a critical migration, Laurent and Clairmont work as a pair, and one person on your side is trained during the migration.

  • Laurent Tulpan, founder of Coeur du WebLaurent, founder and CTOThe inventory, the costed decision against the renewal, the sequencing of the waves.

What you sign for a VMware to Proxmox migration, in short.

Price
The migration on a fixed fee, set from the inventory, before any machine moves.
Licenses
In your name, at the tier you choose. We do not resell them.
Rollback
Written before each wave, inside an agreed maintenance window.
Data
No data loss, in writing. A loss attributable to our work is restored at our expense.
Exit
Tested runbooks, a trained person, credentials in your name.

Six questions teams ask before leaving VMware.

Can Proxmox be used to replace VMware?

For most small and mid-sized estates, yes. Proxmox VE runs virtual machines on KVM (Kernel-based Virtual Machine) and containers on LXC (Linux Containers), with clustering, live migration between nodes, snapshots and a web interface, which covers what a typical vSphere setup is used for.

Where it falls short is the surrounding ecosystem: fewer third-party tools integrate with it natively, and some documentation is community-written. If your operations lean on a specific VMware add-on, check that dependency first.

What is the best way to migrate from VMware to Proxmox?

Inventory first, pilot second, waves third. Proxmox documents an automatic import of complete virtual machines from ESXi, including a live-import option that starts the machine before all its data has been copied, plus manual methods through OVF (Open Virtualization Format) or disk import.

The tooling is not the hard part. The guest drivers, the backup chain and the operating procedures are, which is why a migration is planned around workloads and restore tests rather than around the import button.

Is Proxmox better than ESXi?

Neither is better in the abstract. ESXi sits in a larger ecosystem with more certified integrations, under a licensing model you do not control. Proxmox VE is open source, licensed under the AGPLv3, and priced as optional support rather than as a license to run.

The useful question is which one your team can operate and restore under pressure. For an estate of a few hosts to a few dozen, with a team willing to learn it or a provider to hold it, Proxmox is usually the sounder choice.

Can Proxmox do live migration?

Yes. Between nodes of the same Proxmox cluster, a running machine can move from one host to another without being stopped.

Moving a machine from VMware to Proxmox is a different operation: the import can start the machine early, but plan a short interruption per machine and schedule it inside the wave's window.

How much is Proxmox support?

Proxmox Server Solutions publishes its subscription prices per physical CPU socket and per year:

  • Community at 120 €
  • Basic at 370 €
  • Standard at 550 €
  • Premium at 1100 € (read on proxmox.com on September 28, 2026, checked again on September 29, 2026)

These are the vendor list prices, not ours. The subscription gives access to the enterprise repository and, from Basic upward, to support tickets with the vendor. The software itself runs without a subscription.

Why are companies leaving VMware?

Three reasons come up, and only the first is financial:

  • Since Broadcom completed the acquisition at the end of 2023, perpetual licenses gave way to subscriptions and products were folded into bundles, so a small estate can end up paying for a package sized for someone else.
  • Renewals turned from a conversation into a number.
  • A fifteen-year safe default stopped feeling safe, so teams now price the alternatives even when they intend to stay.

And when leaving VMware is part of something bigger?
